  1. String Quartet in B flat, 'Sunrise' Op 76 No 4 - (Franz) Joseph Haydn
  2. String Quartet No 4, 'Buczak' - Philip Glass

The Manchester-based Ferncliffe String Quartet presents a programme of works by Haydn and Philip Glass. Haydn's 'Sunrise' Quartet is the fourth of the six Op 76 string quartets, dedicated to the Hungarian Count Joseph Georg von Erdödy. It's nickname 'Sunrise' derives from the rising opening theme over a set of sustained chords. Philip Glass's String Quartet No 4 'Buczak', was written as a memorial piece for the artist Brian Buczak. It was commissioned by Geoffrey Hendricks and first performed at a memorial service on the 2nd anniversary of the artist's death on July 4 1989. The music represents musical impression of him as a person as well as a tribute to his life's work.

Free recital - retiring collection.
