Laura Rossi wrote the music for the Imperial War Museum's 1916 film The Battle of the Somme. This project, coupled with her extensive research on the First World War has led to this new, richly evocative work that combines stunningly emotive music with WWI poems in which soldiers share their feelings, their spirit, their strength, their hopes and fears. Luara's own great uncle was a stetcher bearer on the Somme battlefields and was the only one of his pals who survived.

Poom Prommachart, winner of the second Sussex International Piano Competition, returns to play one of the great romantic piano concerto- written by Rachmaninov just before he was forced to leave his beloved Russia by the First World War and the Bolshevik revolution. Jehan Alain was one of France's most promising young organists and composers, tragically killed whilst serving as a despatch rider for the French Army. The concert opens with George Butterworth's beautiful evocation of a rural idyll soon to be shattered by war.
