Heart Variations was commissioned by Egle Mei, with support from Arts Council England, Liverpool City Council, Dawsons, Oxford University Press and Brain Machine. The music takes as its point of inspiration a series of electrocardiograph readings, and a scenario of five life stages devised by Egle Mei. It was premiered by the Liverpool String Quartet at St George's Hall Concert Room, Liverpool, on 11 April 2014.

Founded in 2010 the Liverpool String Quartet have already toured internationally nine times. Highlights include concerts at the Teatro Principal de Valls (Spain), in the Cathedral of Pamplona, and in Olite (Navarra). In July 2012 the Liverpool String Quartet conducted a tour of the Balearic islands, with concerts in Valldemossa (Mallorca) and were invited to perform in the inaugural concert of the prestigious International Music Festival of Mahon (Menorca).

In Liverpool, the Liverpool String Quartet was Quartet in Residence at the Bluecoat from 2012 until 2015 and at the Nordic Church and Cultural Centre in Liverpool since 2015. Notable concerts given in Merseyside have been held at the Williamson Art Gallery on the Wirral, Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, the Atkinson (Southport) and Mayer Hall (Bebington, Wirral),

During 2014 the Liverpool String Quartet premiered two compositions by Ian Stephens and Meike Holzmann at St George's Hall in Liverpool. The 2015/2016 season will include performances at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, St George’s Hall and the Nordic Church. In December 2015, the quartet will travel to Spain once again, to play a European premiere of The Passion of Mary by English composer Howard Blake, who will actually be conducting the performance in person.
