  1. Symphonic Fantasia, 'Pohjolan tytär' (Pohjola’s Daughter) Op 49 - Jean Sibelius
  2. Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in E minor Op 85 - Sir Edward Elgar
  3. Scheherazade Op 35 - Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov

Stories and more stories! Sibelius tells of a magician encountering a stunningly beautiful maid; he entreats her to join him, but she imposes conditions. Can he win her? Rimsky-Korsakov takes on the story of Sheherazade who tells her cruel husband an unfinished story each night until he realises his love for her. Picture a story in each movement, and recognise Sheherazade in the haunting violin solos.

Another product of the war is Elgar's Cello Concerto; the result shows the composer "wearing his heart on his sleeve". But it is a much-loved work, and we look forward to hearing it, brought to life in the expressive hands of the gifted Bedford cellist, Julian Metzger.
