Renaissance Venice was already a naval and commercial superpower when, in 1527, the Doge personally appointed the great Adrian Willaert as maestro of St Mark's Basilica, part of his ambitious effort to ensure that Venice also became a cultural superpower. The famous composer was equally important as a teacher, and his roster of talented pupils (including Cipriano de Rore and Andrea Gabrieli) formed the basis of the Venetian school.

In this concert of Venetian splendour conducted by Robert Hollingworth, De Profundis performs de Rore's Missa Praeter rerum seriem, based on the Marian motet by Josquin, alongside motets by Adrian Willaert, Andrea Gabrieli and Giovanni Gabrieli. There will also be instrumental music by Giovanni Gabrieli and other northern Italian masters.

Robert Hollingworth is the founder-director of I Fagiolini, an award-winning group renowned for its innovative staged productions of vocal music from the Renaissance to the present day. In 2015 the group made its Carnegie Hall debut and also premiered its latest music theatre project Betrayal (a plyphonic crime drama) featuring the music of Gesualdo.
