Monmouth Choral Society will be celebrating the 600th anniversay of the Battle of Agincourt with a concert of music from both sides of the English channel. The main work is 'Agincourt' by George Dyson, a setting of texts from Shakespeare’s Henry V, which glows with lush sonorities and strikes a sturdy and inspiring pose. Alongside this comes Parry’s anthem 'The Glories of our Blood and State' which, despite its ominous title, is actually a sombre and majestic warning against nationalistic hubris and jingoism. Meanwhile, as a reminder of all we owe to the beauties of French culture, the programme also includes three charming and expressive renaissance motets, as well as Fauré’s incomparably elegant 'Dolly Suite' for piano duet. We are delighted that Monmouth Comprehensive School are joining us for this concert, making their own presentations in words and music to mark this historic anniversary.
