  2. Sonata for Viola and Piano - Melanie Ruth Daiken
  3. String Quartet No 1 Op 7 - Arnold Schoenberg

In what is becoming a Festival tradition, the Sunday afternoon concert presents some more unusual chamber music pieces. Alongside Haydn is the Sonata for viola and piano, by composer Melanie Daiken. Melanie was a student of Olivier Messiaen in Paris, and wrote this Sonata in 1981 for violist Csaba Erdely. This afternoon performed by James Boyd, and young pianist Mishka Momen. After this comes something really special: a rare performance of Schoenberg's first string quartet, given by some brilliant young students from Music Works chamber courses, who have been working alongside Festival violinist Catherine Manson.
