Come and hear Watford Philharmonic Society in their 80th anniversary year.

Whilst the music of Elgar and Walton is well known, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is not so often performed these days. He was probably the first composer of African descent to be taken seriously by the European musical establishment. At one stage he was known as the 'African Mahler'. His composition, Hiawatha's Wedding Feast, is based on Longfellow's poem, and became wildly popular from its 1st performance in 1898.

Walton became known as a reliable 'patriotic' composer. Olivier commissioned him to write the score for his Henry V film. This orchestral suite is based on the film score. As well as the battle music at Agincourt, there is a very touching sequence for the death of Falstaff.

The choir and orchestra will also be performing Elgar's Music Makers which portrays an image of the dreaming artst.
