Cantores’s Autumn programme 'Ancient and Modern' focuses on two periods of sacred choral music; the Renaissance and our own time. As usual, John Holloway has put together and interesting and varied programme.

For the Ancient we go back to the 16th century, the height of the English Renaissance with Thomas Tallis’s 'Lamentations of Jeremiah' and 'Lullaby' by William Byrd. At the same time in Rome, Tomas Luis de Victoria was composing his 'Ave Maria' and Allegri’s Miserere' was being sung every year during Holy Week, in the Sistine Chapel .

The Modern is represented by four living composers: Gabriel Jackson’s 'Missa Sanctae Margaretae' (first performance 2010), two 'Strathclyde Motets' by James MacMillan, Jonathan Dove’s 'Seek him that maketh the seven stars' and 'Northern Lights' by Ola Gjeilo.
