Vocal ensemble Siglo de Oro make their festival debut this Winter Festival, with a musical narrative of the traditional Christmas story. Forging a reputation for renaissance and contemporary choral music, their programme features evocative works from across ten centuries; from 12th-century abbess and composer Hildegard of Bingen to celebrated present day American composer Eric Whitacre.

Placing ancient words and music together with new responses, they journey through four themes from the nativity: the Rose, the Mother, the Mystery and the Light. Framing this are two works of ‘recomposition’, contemporary reinterpretations of traditional melodies, beginning with Jan Sandström’s ethereal Det är en ros utsprungen and Karl Jenkins’s lively Gaudete.
