Popular pieces for strings by Grieg, Dvorák and Holst are complemented by a work of John Ireland who lived much of his later life just across the South Downs in Washington. Jess Gillam has been described by Snake Davis as “one of the best young saxophonists in the UK”. A woodwind category finalist in the BBC Young Musician 2014, Jess was awarded the prestigious Walter Todd Bursary at the final and has recently shared top billing with Courtney Pine at a Jazz concert in her home town of Ulverston. Anthony Hewitt is another native of Ulverston who dazzled us with his recent performance of the Malcolm Williamson Second Piano Concerto. He returns with another romantic piano concerto, by Doreen Carwithen, a pioneering female composer for Rank films in the 1940s and 1950s whose accessible style has won her many new fans. The piano concerto was premiered at the 1952 Henry Wood Proms to great acclaim.
