  2. Variations on a Rococo Theme in A Op 33 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky
  3. Symphony No 3, 'Sinfonia espansiva' Op 27 - Carl Nielsen

Nikolaj Znaider is not only a world-renowned violinist but his inspirational conducting has also won him huge acclaim. He begins this concert with Grieg's evocative incidental music to Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, arguably the most successful collaboration between playwright and composer. That's followed by Tchaikovsky's homage to the Classical age, as acclaimed Chinese cellist Jian Wang takes on the technique-testing Rococo Variations. The climax of the concert is Carl Nielsen's Third Symphony. The piece that made the Danish composer's name, it's a big-hearted affirmation of human energy and his own love of life, full of his vibrant tone colours and propulsive rhythms.

Free pre-concert talk, 6.30pm in the auditorium: Nikolaj Znaider in conversation with the Halle's Head of Artistic Planning, Geoffrey Owen.
