  1. Sonata for Piano No 27 in E minor Op 90 - Ludwig van Beethoven
  2. Sonata for Piano No 20 in A D 959 - Franz Schubert
  3. Sonata for Piano in G Op 37 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky

Our third Beethoven work in the Festival is one of the shortest of his piano sonatas, having just two movements, the second consisting of eight varied statements of one of the composer's lovliest themes. Schubert's A major sonata, the second of three composed in the final weeks of his life, has a wonderfully simple slow movement interrupted by a despairing outburst, typical of many in his late slow movements. The rondo finale is one of Schubert's finest with a particularly attractive main melody. Tchaikovsky's piano music comprises mainly short pieces; one exception is his Grand Sonata in four movements, often recorded but rarely to be heard live. Its movements are linked by a common theme; the second is a long lyrical andante while the galloping finale makes considerable demands on the player's virtuosity.

As one of today's most successful pianists Freddy Kempf needs little introduction. He has built a unique reputation as an explosive and physical performer not afraid to take risks and as a serious, sensitive and profoundly musical artist. He has performed all over the world both in recital and as soloist with many of the world's major orchestras.
