You are warmly invited to attend a free lunchtime recital of songs and piano works from Domenico Scarlatti to Richard Strauss, performed by accomplished musicians Ian Ritchie (baritone) and Esther Cavett (piano). Ian Ritchie read Law and Music at Trinity College, Cambridge, before continuing his studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He sang many solo performances in oratorios, operas and recitals until his early twenties and then switched to a different musical career. Since 1979 Ian has directed a number of prominent arts organisations, including the City of London Sinfonia, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Opera North, St Magnus Festival (Orkney) and, until summer 2013, the City of London Festival. He is currently Artistic Director of the Setúbal Music Festival (Portugal) and Artistic Director of The Musical Brain (uniting music, science and medicine). Coming full circle, Ian still performs as a soloist and takes lessons from Linda Hirst. Esther had a first career as an academic and performing musician. She studied the piano with Guy Jonson at The Royal Academy of Music and also with Susan Bradshaw, and now studies with Thalia Myers. She was awarded a Fellowship for doctoral research at Yale and subsequently became a lecturer in Music at Oxford University and was invited to become an honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. Esther published widely on Mozart and other musical topics, including a long contribution on Mozart’s style to the Mozart Companion (Thames and Hudson). For the past 20 years Esther has worked as a lawyer in the City, most recently advising clients on the consequences of the credit crunch.
