A Russian New Year | The Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra

For the first of their three-concert series in the Pump Room join the CSO to welcome in the New Year with sparkling music from three of the greatest of Russian composers. Rimsky Korsakov's Snow Maiden Suite conjures the high mountains, snow-covered plains and rivers of the composer's homeland. One of the foremost orchestrators of the Romantic period his gifts are lavishly displayed in the Capriccio Espagnol, a piece that will not fail to get you foot tapping – even dancing in the aisles. Khachaturian's Masquerade, which opens the concert with it's well-known waltz theme may even afford another opportunity for dance. Then there is a special treat inserted in this cavalcade of Russian music, the trombone concerto by Henri Tomasi, a French twentieth century composer. Finally the sugar (plum fairy) on the cake is the much loved Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky.

All designed to dispel the gloom of January.
