  1. 2 English Idylls - George Butterworth
  2. Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra in F minor - Ralph Vaughan Williams
  3. Variations on an original theme, 'Enigma' Op 36 - Sir Edward Elgar

Newbury Symphony Orchestra will present a memorable concert, featuring works by three English composers, Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams and George Butterworth, under the direction of conductor John Traill.

George Butterworth wrote his Two English Idylls in 1911, just a few years before his early death in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. These two pieces incorporate English folk tunes in a colourful romantic style. Edward Leech, a tuba player well known to local audiences, will be the soloist in Vaughan Williams’s Tuba Concerto, a delightful work which brings out the warmth of this seldom-heard brass instrument.

Finally John Traill will direct the orchestra in Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations, a series of musical portraits of Elgar’s family and friends, including the powerfully moving ‘Nimrod’ and ending with a sparkling finale.
