  1. Suites, from Banchetto Musicale - Johann Hermann Schein
  2. Taffel Consort - Thomas Simpson
  3. Mensa Sonora in A minor - Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber
  4. Tafelmusik (Musique de Table) Part II - Georg Philipp Telemann

Schein’s Banchetto Musicale (‘Musical banquet’) inspired a wealth of meal-time entertainment across Europe. Freed from the stylistic confines of the church and the private chamber, a whole new musical genre arose.

This trend took Europe by storm, encompassing an astonishing variety of styles and nationalities. Thomas Simpson, Kent-born but employed in Heidelberg, wrote quirky ‘string quartets’, whilst Biber’s Bohemian roots blended with Italian influences in his dance music.

Telemann’s lavish suites mark the genre’s zenith, combining quartet, concerto and sonata forms in three colourful sets whose musical invention is often compared to JS Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Shortly after Telemann penned these masterpieces, the idea of mealtime entertainment fell out of fashion. The form might have been short-lived, but the variety and freshness of the music remains as enthralling as ever.
