  2. String Quartet No 3 in C Sharp major - Bela Bartók
  3. String Quartet No 2 in A minor Op 13 - Felix Mendelssohn

Winner of the 2010 St. Martins in the Fields Chamber Music Competition, the Piatti Quartet has performed at the Purcell Room, Southbank Centre and live on BBC Radio 3 numerous times. This year the group was chosen to participate in the Wigmore Hall String Quartet competition as well as the Future Classics tour.

Mendelssohn’s youthful Quartet in A minor was influenced by late Beethoven quartets. He uses his own song Is it true? as a recurring theme, reminiscent of Beethoven’s Must it be? theme from his last complete work.

Schubert’s single-movement Quartettsatz has a romantic temperament and furious intensity, and heralds his late style, paving the way for his three late, great string quartets.

As in much of his music, Bartók drew on folk melodies as inspiration for his dramatic Quartet No.3. It is athrilling piece brimming with varying instrumental effects.
