The critically acclaimed Oxfordshire Early Music trio Musical Banquet will be stopping off at Drum Castle on Saturday 19th May during their Highland Tour and performing a Gala Charity Concert with all proceeds going to Drum Castle, National Trust for Scotland. Step back in time 400 years to hear the group serve up a delectable menu of musical treats including vocal and instrumental works by Purcell, Gibbons and their English and European contemporaries, interspersed with colourful period anecdotes.
Set amidst the ancient Royal Forest and Park of Drum, on the periphery of Royal Deeside, the venue for tonight's concert is an imposing Jacobean mansion house set high on a ridge overlooking the river Dee , just 10 miles west of Aberdeen. The performance will take place in the elegant surroundings of The Library, formerly part of the Great Hall, with its vaulted celing and open fireplace, and this is an unusual and highly entertaining opportunity to experience works performed in a period setting using period instruments combined with Countertenor voice much as the 17th and 18th century audience would have heard them. An eclectic selection of music will range from the love songs of C17 Spain, accompanied on Baroque Guitar, to extracts from the semi-operas of Henry Purcell and the concert includes a special tribute to the poet and songwriter Robert Burns. With plenty of surprises along the way, the evening will be presented in the trio’s characteristically innovative and imaginative style.
Ticket prices include a complimentary souvenir programme and during the interval light refreshments will be served when will be an opportunity to meet and talk with the artists.
Places are strictly limited and early booking is strongly recommended.
