The critically acclaimed Oxfordshire early music trio Musical Banquet will be making an eagerly anticipated first visit to St Mary Magdalene Church, Woodstock at 7:30pm on Saturday 17th February 2018 and performing a Gala Charity Concert in aid of Church Funds. Step back in time 400 years to hear the group serve up an eclectic menu of musical delicacies, including vocal and instrumental works by Dowland and Gibbons along with their English and European contemporaries, interspersed with colourful period anecdotes.
Set in the heart of the Oxfordshire market town of Woodstock, just a stone’s throw from the world heritage site Blenheim Palace, St Mary Magdalene Church was built during the reign of Henry I for the convenience of the court during royal visits to the royal hunting lodge of Woodstock Manor, for which it was a chapel at ease. Alteration and restoration over the centuries have culminated in the recent completion of a major Reordering and Refurbishment Project. The church’s many noteworthy features include a fine Norman doorway on the south side, two 13th century windows and an extraordinary 1792 musical turret clock, or carillon, chiming four times a day with a different tune for each day of the week!
This historic building provides a fitting backdrop for tonight’s concert - an unusual and highly entertaining opportunity to experience works performed on period instruments combined with Countertenor voice much as the 17th and 18th century audience might have heard them. With plenty of surprises along the way, the evening will be presented in the group's characteristically innovative, energetic and imaginative style and the gourmet ‘menu’ includes some spicy 'musical nibbles' from 17th century Spain, accompanied by Baroque Guitar, and some 'sweet treats' from one of England's finest composers, Henry Purcell. A tempting indulgence for all musical gastronomes!
Ticket prices include a complimentary souvenir programme and interval hospitality, when there will be an opportunity to meet and talk with the musicians, and all proceeds from this event will be donated to St Mary Magdalene.
Musical Banquet's vibrant and energetic performances have delighted critics and audiences alike:

Come along and experience for yourself this 'Feast for the Ears'!
