Theatron Oneiron explore the trope of the lamenting heroine, and hero, in early opera, in the stunning setting of New College Antechapel, Oxford. Our programme presents a selection of infrequently performed solo laments by Claudio Monteverdi and Francesco Cavalli, including the little known Lamento d’Olimpia, only made available from the surviving manuscript copy in the last decade. These solo laments are presented interspersed with madrigals, including the extensive madrigal cycle, Sestina: Lagrime d'amante al sepolcro dell'amata ('Tears of a lover at the tomb of the beloved'), which reflect the themes and emotions evoked in the laments.

With a line up including current and former singers from the Royal College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Drama, Hochschule für Musik, Mainz, Genesis Sixteen, the choirs of Magdalen, Queen’s and Merton Colleges, Oxford, and Trinity College, Cambridge, Schola Cantorum of Oxford, the Oxford Bach Soloists, and Sansara, this is set to be a must-see performance!

Theatron Oneiron is an early opera and early music production company, founded and run by current and former students of the University of Oxford, and one of the leading student-run opera companies specialising in early opera and early music in the south-east of England.

In 2016, Theatron Oneiron presented Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo in a fully staged production (St Mary's, Guildford; July 2016), with an international cast featuring current and former singers from a range of the top conservatoires of Britain and Europe.
