  3. Symphony No 1 in C minor Op 68 - Johannes Brahms

For their next performance the Hillingdon Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a selection of German orchestral favourites to launch their 31st season of music making. The concert will begin with Schumann’s Manfred Overture, one of the composer’s most imaginative and well-loved works inspired by the poem of the same name by Lord Byron.

Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No.2 in E-flat major will follow and seduce every listener with its lyrical melodies and dazzling virtuosic effects. For this the Orchestra are delighted to be joined by soloist Joseph Shiner, an acclaimed clarinettist and recipient of numerous prizes who was recently featured as a BBC Music Magazine ‘Rising Star’ in their Great artists of tomorrow series. Joseph is also a founding member of the Magnard Ensemble, currently bringing music to a very young audience with their incredibly successful Roald Dahl themed project: ‘Revolting Rhymes and Marvellous Music’.

The concert will conclude with Brahms’ Symphony No.1 in C minor, the composer’s epic answer to Beethoven that wonderfully illustrates his skill at magically blending romantic passion with classical discipline. Highly dramatic but also beautifully expressive this work promises to provide a grand finale to this celebration of German composers.

Hillingdon Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 1985 and is now well established in the local area with over 60 registered members. Its membership continues to be made up of local amateur musicians who wish to continue to develop their orchestral playing. Over the last 30 years the Orchestra has performed a wide variety of works at some of London’s most prestigious venues including Cadogan Hall, Southwark Cathedral and the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank. The Orchestra has also given countless concerts at local venues throughout Hillingdon including two outdoor concerts with fireworks in the grounds of Swakeleys House in Ickenham.

‘An evening with the German Masters’ will be led by Mackenzie Richards and conducted by the founder of the Orchestra, Peter J. Williams. For further details see the orchestra's website.
