  2. 12 Variations on 'See the conqu'ring hero comes' from Handel's Judas Maccabeus WoO 45 - Ludwig van Beethoven
  3. Piano Trio in C Minor Op.1 No.3 - Ludwig van Beethoven

Following Benjamin Nabarro and Tim Horton’s much talked about, intense rendition of Beethoven’s monumental Kreutzer Sonata at this year’s May Festival, the pair return to the Studio to give a repeat performance of this great work. Beethoven originally fondly dedicated it to the violinist George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower, “great fool and mulatto composer”, but the two men fell out and Beethoven instead honoured another violinist, Rodolphe Kreutzer.

The three Opus 1 Piano Trios that Beethoven wrote for Prince Lichnowsky were warmly welcomed by Haydn, yet he advised against the third trio being published. An angry Beethoven attributed this to jealousy, yet Haydn believed that the public would not understand the strong contrasts and harmonic innovations. This idea of a ‘work ahead of its time’ was destined to become a common feature of Beethoven’s composing career.

This is the Leonore Piano Trio's third concert in a Series of 8 of a cycle of the complete Beethoven violin sonatas, cello sonatas and piano trios.
