'Alex has a very artistic and charismatic personality combined with brilliant pianism' – Dmitri Alexeev
Of all the composers to contemplate for a piano recital dedicated to a single author, Chopin must be amongst the most challenging: not only are almost all of his works in the current repertoire, but there is a history of Chopin performance that includes every great pianist since Liszt, and a recorded legacy which begins with people who heard Chopin play, and continues today, comprising virtually all the great pianists of every age. So hats off to Alexander Ullman for stepping fearlessly up to the plate, with a programme that, in the space of a single recital, embraces some of Chopin’s finest achievements in both large- and small-scale forms, structures which, even if Chopin invented none of them, he made his own. Mention a Polonaise, Nocturne, Waltz, Scherzo, Berceuse, Mazurka or Ballade for piano, and it is impossible not to pay homage to Chopin’s phenomenal contribution. Alexander Ullman’s programme presents a wide range of Chopin’s classic forms, framing one of the composer’s most enduring and striking compositions: the Sonata No 2 Op 35 with its unflagging and stunning originality; there can be few listeners unfamiliar with the Funeral March, whilst the finale remains one of the great musical enigmas! – Leslie Howard
