English song recital, to include works by Vaughan Williams, Butterworth and traditional Northumbrian folksongs.

An established star on the world’s great opera stages, Sir Thomas Allen is one of the finest exports from the North of England, widely admired for his voice, the versatility of his repertoire and his acting. He makes a welcome début at Leeds Lieder with a programme of well-loved English songs, including Vaughan Williams’s Songs of Travel, six songs from George Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad and a group of traditional songs from his CD, Songs my father taught me.

Sir Thomas comments: “…there’s no academia behind this, just my very simple need to recapture memories I have of amateur singers coming through our house to practise these songs and others.”

Leeds Lieder is delighted to present this concert as part of the Leeds College of Music 50th anniversary celebrations.
