Rose Cholmondeley studied at the Royal College of Music with Phyllis Sellick and later with Angus Morrison, Louis Kentner and Sulamita Aronovsky in London, and Constantin Schmaeling in Paris.
In London she has given recitals at the Purcell Room and Wigmore Hall, the Polish Embassy, Polish Institute, French Institute and Leighton House. She has toured India and given recitals in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
Her interest in the music of Chopin often takes her to Poland, where she has toured the country several times, also giving recitals at Chopin’s birthplace, Zelazowa Zola, and the Ostrogski Castle, home of the Chopin Museum in Warsaw, the Sandomierz Festival and the prestigious Antonin Chopin Festival. She has also performed Chopin’s E minor piano concerto in Krakow with the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra under Jerzy Maksymiuk.
With actor Charles Grant she has taken part in the Guildford International Music Festival, the Hatchlands Piano Festival, the Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival, King’s Lynn Festival and Finchcocks Broadwood Festival. In 1998 – the 150th anniversary of Chopin’s visit to the UK – they appeared for one month at the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Rose Cholmondeley has also given many recitals of French music at venues including the Salle Gaveau, Paris, and the French Institute in London, and has performed Schumann and Beethoven at Leighton House for the Friends of Leighton House and the Beethoven Society of Europe.
In 2010 – the bicentenary of Chopin’s birth – Rose performed for the Chopin Society in London, in the Chopin Academy in Warsaw, in the South of France, on the Chopin Pleyel at Hatchlands Park and in other venues in England. That autumn she also gave concerts in the USA with Charles Grant reading Chopin’s letters, for the English Speaking Union in Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans and Orlando.
More recently she opened the first Malpas Festival in Cheshire, performed at a Chopin Festival in Tunbridge Wells and gave recitals in the Conservatoire Rachmaninoff, Paris and the Silesian Library, Katowice.
Rose Cholmondeley is President of The Chopin Society UK. She is a Steinway Artist, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, and a Freeman of the City of London. In 1999 the President of The Republic of Poland awarded her The Knight’s Cross of The Order of Merit, and in 2011 she received the Gold “Gloria Artis” medal awarded by the Polish Minister of Culture.
