Hazel Grove Orchestra Concert

Hazel Grove Orchestra presents a concert in memory of Peter Thursfield, who was the secretary and 2nd bassoonist of the Orchestra. The concert includes music which Peter had played recently and music featuring the bassoon.

The concert begins with Rossini's sparkling overture, The Thieving Magpie. Les dragons d'Alcala, from Carmen Suite No 1, by Bizet, features the 2 bassoons of the orchestra. Mozart's popular Concerto for Bassoon and orchestra, written when he was only 18 years old and his first concerto for a woodwind instrument, is performed by Kevin O'Sullivan. Mozart's concerto brilliantly demonstrates both the agility and the lyricism of this instrument. The concert concludes with Schumann's joyous Symphony No. 1, the Spring Symphony, written soon after his marriage to Clara Wieck. Schumann's happiness in his marriage inspired the springtime character of this symphony.
