The setting of the requiem text by Duruflé (1947) is a triumphant fusion of Gregorian Chant with sensual romantic harmony. The hypnotic beauty of Pärt's Berliner Messe (1990) creates an ambience of prayerful meditation and powerful spiritual affirmation. Both composers have produced works grounded in the past but which are among the most vibrant and expressive works of their era.
