The critically acclaimed Oxfordshire Early Music trio Musical Banquet will be appearing at Holy Trinity Church, Long Melford, Suffolk and performing a special Charity Concert in aid of Church Restoration. Step back in time 400 years to hear the group serve up a delectable menu of musical treats including vocal and instrumental works by Henry Purcell, Orlando Gibbons and their English and European contemporaries, interspersed with colourful period anecdotes.
Holy Trinity is one of the great Suffolk Wool Churches and was built almost entirely in the 15th century at a time of growing prosperity among the local cloth merchants. The only modern part is the tower, dating from 1903. Its medieval stained glass stained glass is of world renown, and the Rabbit (Hare) window above the North door symbolizes the Trinity. Standing high on a hill at the north end of the village this beautiful and historic building forms a fitting backdrop for this afternoon's concert which seeks to raise funds for ongoing restoration.
Today is an unusual and highly entertaining opportunity to experience works performed on period instruments combined with Countertenor voice much as the 16th and 17th century audience would have heard them. An eclectic selection of music will include a tribute to the poet and songwriter Robert Burns, love songs from C17 Spain accompanied on Baroque Guitar and excerpts from the semi-operas of Henry Purcell. With plenty of surprises along the way, the afternoon will be presented in the trio’s characteristically innovative, lively and imaginative style. There is no charge for admission but donations are invited in aid of the Long Melford Church Restoration Fund.
Refreshments will be served after the concert, when there will be an opportunity to meet and talk with the artists.
