The award-winning Purcell Singers return to the heart of London just days before the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics with a celebration of English music and poetry. Joined by Andy Massey on the piano and Dan Swana on double bass, the beautiful setting of St. Martin-in-the-Fields provides the perfect backdrop for an evening of poetry and song from a selection of English masters.

Vaughan Williams' charming Serenade to Music gently opens the evening, setting an extract from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice for sixteen soloists with an exceptional piano duet accompaniment. This will be followed by the ingenuity and variety of part-songs by Elgar, Finzi and Vaughan Williams, and finally the evening will close with Songs and Sonnets, George Shearing's exuberant show-piece for choir, piano and double bass.

With words by Robert Bridges, George Herbert, Tennyson, Byron and Shelley, as well as the great bard himself, this is truly a celebration of olympic proportions.
