  1. Vespers, 'All-Night Vigil' Op 37 - Sergei Rachmaninoff

Remarkably completed in around two weeks, the Vespers, or more accurately All-Night Vigil of Rachmaninov stands as not only one of the most extraordinary pieces of religious music ever written, it is also considered one of his best works. Its premiere held in 1915, followed swiftly by the Revolution and banning of religious music in Russia in 1917, marks this work as a monument to the end of an era. Although the composer had stopped attending church, he brings Russian Orthodox chant to the centre of his composition, both haunting and overwhelming in its beauty.

This is a piece that needs to be experienced, and the sound and colours the Cheltenham Bach Choir can produce are perfect to send tingles down your spine. Book early - this will truly be an evening to remember.
