  1. Prelude, from Suite No 1 for solo cello in G BWV 1007 - Johann Sebastian Bach
  2. Hear my Prayer, O Lord Z 15 - Henry Purcell
  3. Crucifixus - Antonio Lotti
  4. Stabat Mater a 10 voci - Domenico Scarlatti
  5. Maria, quid ploras - Claudio Monteverdi
  6. Lament, from Jephte, 'Historia di Jephte' - Giacomo Carissimi
  7. Komm, Jesu, komm BWV 229 - Johann Sebastian Bach

Bittersweet, sinuous and yearning for resolution, this is heart-rending music that tells of sacrifice and healing.

We share in Mary’s sorrow at the foot of the cross in Scarlatti’s dazzling Stabat Mater, feel the anguish as Jephte’s daughter weeps at her fate, and find solace in the glorious optimism of Bach’s Komm, Jesu, komm.

Jeffrey writes:

"Baroque music is central to understanding western classical music and, as ever, it is at the heart of Ex Cathedra’s work. Our home town Birmingham, perhaps surprisingly, has a proud and distinguished history in this field and we continue our exploration of Birmingham Baroque with three programmes. Baroque Passion includes pieces from the full 150 years which define the period from Monteverdi through Purcell, Charpentier and Carissimi to the great Johann Sebastian Bach."

Running time: approx. 2 hours, including interval.
