  1. Sonata for Piano No 2 in A Op 2 No 2 - Ludwig van Beethoven
  2. Études symphoniques (with 5 posthumous variations) Op 13 - Robert Schumann

26-year-old Ariel Lanyi, a prize-winner at the 2021 Leeds International Piano Competition performs a programme of works that Beethoven and Schumann both composed in their mid-twenties. Beethoven exploded onto the musical scene in Vienna with his second sonata which shocked audiences of the time and still retains its power today. Full of contrasts, the Sonata paid homage to Mozart and Haydn, but was also bold and expansive. The young Schumann was infatuated with the daughter of a Baron and wrote these studies for him, experimenting with new ideas and displaying a wealth and complexity of colours that are symphonic in scale, and some of the most challenging pieces in the Romantic repertoire.

Ticket price includes tea, coffee and cake before or after the concert.
