  5. Sonata for Piano in B minor S 178 - Franz Liszt

A rare opportunity to hear both books of Debussy's Images performed within a single programme by London based pianist, David Brain. Full blown French impressionism suffuses these works, delighting us with bells, ruined temples, the intricate tracings of light in water and brightly coloured fish.

Playful jinks abound in the opening item: the second of Beethoven's three Op 10 Sonatas from the late 1790s. Much less commonly heard than its published neighbours, this early work offers both a moody alternative for a slow movement and an exciting finale rich in counterpoint.

The tiny psychotic splinters which make up Schoenberg's fascinating Six Small Piano Pieces, Op 19 continue after the interval, and the concert ends with one of the great creations from the mid nineteenth century: Liszt's sole contribution to the sonata repertory. Wrestling with issues of divinity, malevolence, ardour and heroism, the Sonata in B minor is a miracle of thematic transformation cast in a single movement of half an hour's duration.
