Change of soloists:
Unfortunately, Sir John Tomlinson and Sarah Pring have been forced to withdraw from the performances of Katya Kabanova on 11 and 13 Jan 2023 due to illness. Pavlo Hunka will now sing the role of Dikoj and Claire Barnett-Jones will sing the roles of Glasha and Feklusha.
Janácek’s opera of loneliness, love, and the price of passion, in a dramatic concert performance from Sir Simon Rattle and a hand-picked cast.
Katya is young, sensitive and desperate for love. But trapped in a remote country village with a bored husband and his snobbish family, she has no way out, until a summer thunderstorm changes everything. Uncompromisingly honest, and pulsing with intensely human emotion, Katya Kabanova is opera for grown-ups, written in music that cuts straight to the chase. The LSO’s concert stagings of classic operas always make headlines: this will be one to remember.
Tonight’s cast includes the superb tenor Simon O’Neill and, appearing in one of her signature roles as seen at the Royal Opera House, Amanda Majeski as Katya.
‘Majeski gives such heartfelt commitment to the role of Katya that one worries how she can come back down from the emotional peaks and precipices that she scales.’ ~Opera Today
