  1. Prussian Sonata for harpsichord No 2 in B flat major Wq 48 No 2 - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach
  2. Sonata for Piano No 8 in C minor, 'Pathétique' Op 13 - Ludwig van Beethoven
  3. Sonata for Piano No 2 in F sharp minor Op 2 - Johannes Brahms

The Nottingham Classics Sunday Piano Series begins with the welcome return of Anna Tsybuleva, who delighted audiences with a programme of sonatas in 2019. These three defining sonatas drew inspiration from earlier masters. CPE Bach’s dramatic Prussian sonatas, have been described as a link between the music of JS Bach and Beethoven, heralding the spirit of ‘Sturm und Drang’. The tragic sonorities and sorrowful romantic mood of Beethoven’s great Pathetique sonata were inspired by JS Bach. Brahms’s second sonata, is a highly romantic and virtuosic fantasy-sonata, inspired by Beethoven and dedicated to his great friend Clara Schumann.
