  1. Partita No 1 in B flat for keyboard BWV 825 - Johann Sebastian Bach
  2. Sonata for Piano No 17 in D minor Op 31 No 2 - Ludwig van Beethoven
  3. Selected sonatas - Domenico Scarlatti

Virginia Black performs an evening of contrasts, moving from the stately Partita of JS Bach, to the brilliance of the rhythms and inventive genius of Scarlatti, to the passionate complexity of Beethoven.

Virginia uses her vast experience of performing the Baroque repertoire to great effect in bringing the works of Bach and Scarlatti to the modern concert grand, rather than the harpsichord for which they were written. The stately grandeur of the Bach Partita seems worlds away from the sunlight and vivacity of the Scarlatti sonatas!

Beethoven’s great Tempest sonata brings a rush of adrenaline and a reminder of the stresses and tribulations suffered by the composer as his deafness began to take hold.
