As the title suggests, this concert from Haarlem features music with something to say about the lives we’re leading now: pieces by leading and emerging composers such as David Lang, Eriks Ešenvalds, Wiecher Mandemaker and Frieda Gustavs confront contemporary reality head on. In the stunningly theatrical setting of Haarlem’s Sint Bavokerk, we reflect on current trends in the world and the all-important calming presence of singing and human voices within it. Guest soloists bind the pieces together in short - sometimes improvised - interludes. We also step back in time through works by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Hendrik Andriessen and Charles Ives. To close This Turning World the Laurens Collegium and Consensus Vocalis join forces for Eriks Ešenvalds’ haunting Earth teach me quiet.
