  1. Serenade for Strings in E minor Op 20 - Sir Edward Elgar
  2. Serenade for string orchestra Op 48 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky

Alexandra Wood directs Serenades for strings by Elgar and Tchaikovsky in the first of three Restore and Revive concerts with City of London Sinfonia at Southwark Cathedral.

Written about a decade apart in the late-19th century, these reflective pieces of music are two staples of the string repertoire and are filled with emotion, passion and drama.

The concert will begin with a short mindfulness introduction led by violinist Ann Lovatt – open to anyone who would like to take a moment of calm reflection before the music begins.

The performances (2pm and 7pm) will be presented in City of London Sinfonia's usual seriously informal style. Audience members will be able to roam around the Cathedral and experience the music in varying acoustics around the Gothic and Romanesque building, and pre-booked bubbles of chairs are also available in the Nave.

Safety measures, such as social distancing and wearing masks, are being put into place for everyone's safety. Tickets must be booked in advance.
