Inspired by the drive of our current President, Jane Clarke, South Ribble Strings was formed just over three years ago. Several keen string players were keen to establish greater opportunities to play music to a good level on a regular basis in the South Ribble and surrounding areas. Walton-le Dale High School kindly agreed to allow the group to use their drama studio for rehearsals for which we are continuously grateful.

However keen the individuals, the critical need is for a leader and conductor who can guide and develop the players. The orchestra has been incredibly fortunate to benefit from the inspirational leadership of Louise Latham. Educated in Preston, Louise is a professional violinist, teacher and conductor working in the northwest of England. She studied at the Royal Northern College of Music gaining a teaching diploma with distinction, a performing diploma and was awarded the Hiles Gold Medal for orchestral playing.

From the outset Louise has helped the orchestra to develop a particular sound and style. This varies with each piece played but is critical to individual players understanding of their role within the orchestra. It takes time for this unique sound to develop, so it was with a certain amount of anxiety that the orchestra played its very first concert last summer. We are now delighted to have been invited to perform in the 2020 Light Classics series and we are all looking forward to performing again.
