Step into a world of history, folk heritage and rich musical tradition, as BBC Radio 3 invites chamber musicians, from singers to string quartets, to explore Russian music from across the centuries.

This lunchtime concert places the spotlight on the Gringolts Quartet – led by Russian violinist Ilya Gringolts, an alumnus of the BBC New Generation Artists scheme, which this season celebrates its 20th anniversary. They perform music by three defining composers of Russian music: a folk-inflected string quartet by Shostakovich; Tchaikovsky’s Third String Quartet, a study in emotional intensity; and Stravinsky’s Three Pieces, which bear the trace of everything from music-hall to sacred chant.
