Join us on Saturday 8th June for a concert of gorgeous music, perfect for a summer’s evening. Just ahead of the Letchworth Festival, the orchestra are thrilled to be premiering a new piece by Ilario Ferrari, inspired by Letchworth, featuring a quick-footed little black squirrel!

Ferrari, who was born in Italy, has been working in Hertfordshire as a music educator, jazz musician and composer since 2015. The piece, written especially for Letchworth Sinfonia is called ‘Awakening’, and was inspired by an early morning walk in the town. The peace and tranquillity is apparently disrupted by the composer’s thoughts, represented in the score as ‘scoiattolo nero’ or ‘black squirrel’, first sighted in the UK in Letchworth, in 1912. But it is the acceptance of these thoughts that will give rise to a new melody...

The remainder of the programme also takes inspiration from the natural environment, and includes folk songs, and scenes reminiscent of different places in Italy. The pieces, by Elgar, Delius and Mendelssohn are all favourites in the orchestral repertoire, and we hope you will enjoy them too!
