  1. Messiah HWV 56 - George Frideric Handel

Handel’s Messiah is without doubt one of the most popular choral works ever written. In 1741, Handel received an invitation from the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, the 3rd Duke of Devonshire, to visit Ireland and in preparation for his trip he composed two of his greatest oratorios, Messiah and Samson. The essence of Messiah lies in Charles Jennens's text of "scripture collection", which relates Christ's birth, death and resurrection. After receiving the text, between August 22 and September 14 Handel worked flat out. Part I took him six days, Part II nine, Part III six and the entire orchestration precisely two.
Conducted by Eamonn Dougan, we will also have a fantastic line up of soloists.
Come and enjoy the unique atmosphere and uplifting music by candlelight in the beautiful setting of St Alfege. Book now to avoid disappointment! Tickets are priced £18 for reserved pew seats with cushions, or £14 for side nave and gallery.
