  1. Selection, from Myrthen, 26 songs for voice and piano Op 25 - Robert Schumann
  2. Venezia, Chansons en dialecte venetien - Reynaldo Hahn
  3. Four Last Songs - Richard Strauss, arranged for soprano and piano by Max Wolff and Ernst Roth

South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza brings her exquisite lyric voice and emotional sensitivity to bear on Schumann’s vividly emotional Frauen-Liebe und Leben, and Strauss’s sublimely beautiful Four Last Songs, arranged for soprano and piano. Three selections from Reynaldo Hahn’s Venezia and three of the South African songs featured on Voice of Hope, her debut album for Decca, demonstrate her extraordinary range.

Simon Lepper, ‘whose prowess as a pianist is fused with a real sensitivity to words and to the voice’ (The Times) is a Howard Assembly Room favourite, having accompanied artists including Gweneth-Ann Rand, Christopher Purves and Mark Padmore at the venue in recent years.

“I think I’ve found the new Maria Callas… What initially arrested me, and went on fascinating me, was not only the beauty of her singing, one of the loveliest lightish lyric sopranos I have heard in the flesh, but also commitment to the role she was performing.”
Michael Tanner, The Spectator
