Joanna MacGregor, one of the world’s most innovative and creative pianists, combines her role as Head of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music with a busy career as concert soloist, teacher and festival curator. She is famous as a performer of Bach and Scarlatti, but her repertoire is diverse, as she shows tonight on a powerful Steinway D concert grand.

From their strong opening chords, through the lyrical middle sections to the stormy finish, Beethoven's 32 Variations explore not only the range and colour of the piano but also every imaginable technique. Then Chopin's Mazurkas, rich and flamboyant, lead into the young Alberto Ginastera's vividly imagined Argentinian folkloric dances, concluding a virtuosic first half.

Sofia Gubaidulina's Chaconne is another youthful work based on an older form. Black Earth, written by Fazil Say in 1997, is a fusion of Eastern and Western styles and brings a note of loneliness and loss. Finally, Beethoven's great middle-period Appassionata sonata closes an evening of extraordinary emotions.
