  1. Trio Sonata, from Musikalisches Opfer, 'Musical Offering' BWV 1079 - Johann Sebastian Bach
  2. Ile de feu II, from 4 études de rythme, for piano - Olivier Messiaen
  3. String Quartet No 4 - Bela Bartók

Bach delighted in riddles and his ‘Musical Offering’, a collection of pieces based on a theme given to him by Frederick the Great of Prussia, abounds with them. Messiaen’s short ‘Island of Fire 2’, inspired by Papua New Guinea, is an intense and violent piece. And Bartok’s Fourth String Quartet contains many elements of the composer’s fascination with Hungarian folk music.

Marcus du Sautoy will introduce these remarkable pieces and reveal the mathematical secrets that lie within them.

Ahead of tonights concert there will be a Free to evening ticket holders pre-concert talk starting at 5.45pm. Marcus du Sautoy and Peter Hill will discuss one of Bach's greatest works, The Goldberg Variations, which Peter Hill (piano) will perform at 8.30pm.
