Pinsuti’s next concert is dedicated to St Cecilia, the patron saint of music. The proceeds from the concert will go to the Burley-Tereli Friendship Trust: a partnership between the villages of Burley and Tereli, in the Dogon province of Mali. For more information about their work please see their website.
In an exciting and varied programme we span centuries of celebration from Purcell to Britten, along with a piece written specially for this concert by Musical Director, Robert Webb, and four partsongs by Elgar.
Purcell’s ode, 'Hail! Bright Cecilia', celebrates the organ and the instruments of the orchestra through exciting vocal solos, trios, quartets and magnificent choruses, with instrumental accompaniment. Britten’s masterful 'Hymn to St Cecilia' is equally exciting and utterly different from the Purcell, conveying the various moods found in the three poems by WH Auden. Robert Webb’s intriguing composition, on a text by Alexander Pope, receives its first performance, 110 years after Elgar composed his widely contrasting four partsongs, including the dramatic 'O wild west wind'.
It will be a varied evening and should be one of our best concerts yet! Come and join us in the fine acoustic of St Mary’s.
