Lewisham Choral Society presents a truly regal extravaganza of choral and orchestral music by Haydn and Mozart. The professional lives of both composers were inextricably linked with the imperial court of the Holy Roman Empire, of which their Austrian homeland was a part. It is easy to see why Mozart’s majestic Coronation Mass, a glorious blend of music for choir and soloists, became a particular favourite of the Viennese court and is today still one of his most prized sacred works. This same imperial court later commissioned Haydn to compose his rousing Te Deum in C for the Emperor’s wife, Maria Theresa. The choir also presents another gem from Papa Haydn, his delightful motet Insanae et vanae curae. The dramatic opening section, describing man’s preoccupation with ‘vain and raging cares,’ contrasts with its lyrical conclusion that there is hope as long as we put our trust in God. And following his magnificent rendition of the Elvira Madigan piano concerto last November, Nico de Villiers returns to play the darker tones of Mozart’s previous keyboard work, his Piano Concerto No 20. The choir is accompanied by the Forest Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Dan Ludford-Thomas - a crowning achievement all round, we’re sure you’ll agree!

Lewisham Choral Society is one of London’s most accomplished community choirs, performing at venues across the capital including the Festival and Cadogan Halls. They have taken part in many events, including productions at the Young Vic and the Paralympic Games opening ceremony in 2012. Dan Ludford-Thomas is a talented conductor, teacher and choral director. He is musical director of Lewisham Choral Society, Hackney Singers, Concordia Chamber Choir and coached the NHS choir in the BBC series ‘The Choir’. Dan teaches at Eton and Dulwich College. Award-winning pianist Nico de Villiers is in much demand as soloist, accompanist and coach. He has performed widely in the UK, Europe, South Africa, the USA and China. The Forest Philharmonic is one of London’s most popular community orchestras and has performed with Lewisham Choral Society at the Festival Hall and other major venues.
