  1. Symphony No 2 in C minor, 'Resurrection' - Gustav Mahler

With ten horns, ten trumpets, three deep un-tuned bells, and ‘the largest possible contingent of strings’, Mahler’s Symphony No 2 isn’t for the faint-hearted. Then again neither is its subject which interrogates life, death and transcendence in a vast musical span that finally, ushered in by a hushed and magical mezzo solo, bursts orchestral bounds to include voices. When the choir steals in softly with ‘Aufersteh’n’, ‘Rise again’, time stands still; the ending, a blazing chorale of unmediated ecstasy, overwhelms. We’ve already sung the formidable ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ under Richard Hickox. Join us as the Mahlerian Odyssey continues.
