  1. Introduction and Allegro for strings Op 47 - Sir Edward Elgar
  2. Serenade No 2 in A Op 16 - Johannes Brahms
  3. Symphony No 40 in G minor K 550 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

The first half of our May concert has one well known and popular piece by Edward Elgar and one less well known gem by Brahms. The Brahms is less often played: the more cynical might say that has something to do with the fact it has no parts for violins! However, this evening our own proponents of the fiddle get a break after the (considerable) exertions of the Elgar and you can judge its merits for yourselves. We like it!

Sadly, Mozart never reached his 40th birthday. It’s astonishing to think what he might have achieved with another 30 years. He did, however, reach 40 in symphonies and it is that fantastic work which makes up the second half of the concert; quite apt for our own 40th.
